Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) flexed its military muscle on Saturday, firing long-range missiles and drones as tensions between Tehran and the West worsen.
The ballistic missiles traveled 1,800km and struck artificial targets in the northern part of the Indian ocean. IRGC forces also tested their drone capability in preparation for any future land and sea attacks against the Islamic strict nation.
Iran’s show of force is the fourth of its kind in the last two weeks. The demonstrations come as tensions between the current U.S administration and Tehran sink to an all-time low, with Iran even taking jabs at the U.S over the riots that unfolded close to two weeks ago, on Capitol Hill.
“Choosing a plethora of long-range missiles to hit sea targets shows that if the enemies of the Islamic republic harbour any ill will toward our national interests, maritime trade routes or our land, they will be targeted and destroyed by missiles,” Mohammad Bagheri, chief of staff of the armed forces said.
On Friday, the same day the Trump administration announced new sanctions on Iran's shipping, aerospace, and aviation industries, the IRGC launched dozens of “next-generation" missiles and broadcasted the test on its state-run news network, also firing “suicide drones” designed to take out land targets.
“We have no intention for any aggression, but we announce with this drill that any aggressors to our country will be attacked with full force and in the shortest time.”
The sanctions came a day after Iranian soldiers, taking part in maritime drills, spotted and captured on camera what appeared to be an American spy submarine—that promptly fled the scene––operating in its waters.
