11 people killed in a mass shooting in Virginia

Breaking news coming from Virginia Beach, U.S.A. A gunman has been killed after opening fire at a government building.

Police say the shooting started at 16:00pm local time. The gunman shot and killed 11 people in building number two of the Municipal Centre. 6 other people have been injured and are being treated in hospital. It's not yet clear how severe their injuries are.


Police responded to the scene of the shooting minutes after the first call was made. The shooter was killed in a fire-fight with police.


"This is the most devastating day in the history of Virginia Beach," said Mayor Bobby Dyer. "The people involved are our friends, coworkers, neighbour, colleagues."

Virginia Beach Police Chief James Cervera says the shooter fired indiscriminately. The gunman's identity hasn't yet been made public. Police say the gunman worked at the same Centre, as a utility worker.
