Four people have been shot at Nathan Phillips square during the Toronto Raptors’ Championship parade and celebration this afternoon.

Toronto Police Chief, Mark Saunders, has confirmed that three people have been taken into custody, and two firearms have been seized. The shooting took place around 3:45pm near Bay and Albert streets where the victory parade route ended. The four victims sustained non-life threatening injuries, and Saunders adds that the arrests were made incredibly quickly.

The motives behind the shooting are still unknown at this time.

The parade took place earlier in the afternoon, starting from the exhibition place’s Princes’ Gates and heading east down the Lakeshore Boulevard before coming to an end near the Nathan’s Phillips Square.

The police estimated that around one million people were standing along the parade route taking part in the festivities. It was about halfway through the parade that the master of ceremonies stopped and announced that there was an emergency situation, advising the gatherers to stay calm.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Toronto Mayor John Tory, and Ontario Premier, Doug Ford, were in attendance but remained at the parade as the shooting had been contained.
