According to Germany's health ministry, 29,875 people contracted the virus in the last 24hrs and 585 others died from the infection.

Daily infections have not declined in Germany despite instituting a partial lockdown early in January that shut down bars, restaurants, and entertainment venues.

Plans to relax the measures were announced earlier in the month, but now the medical community is calling on Chancellor Angela Merkel to implement strict lockdown measures ahead of Christmas.

Germany's public health top official, Lothar Wieler, described the situation as "extremely fragile."

Chancellor Merkel is scheduled to meet all 16 state leaders on Sunday to discuss the country's next step in fighting the virus that has already killed over 21-thousand people and infected more than a million residents.
