The football icon, age 60, died on Wednesday from a heart attack, according to his lawyer.

Maradona is considered a legend in the world of football. In 1986, he led Argentina to its first world cup title and later served as the country's head manager, overseeing players such as Leo Messi.

Football stars all over the world mourned the 60-year-olds death. Barca's star Leo Messi posted a tribute on Instagram mourning his idol and former manager's death saying, "I will keep all the beautiful moments that I lived with him and would like to send my condolences to all his family and friends. RIP.”

Brazilian legend Pele, age 80, said he "lost a dear friend, and the world has lost a legend," adding, "One day, I hope, we will play soccer together in the sky.”

Portugal's superstar Christiano Ronald wrote on Instagram, "Today I say goodbye to a friend and the world says goodbye to an eternal genius. One of the best of our times. An unparalleled magician. He leaves too early but leaves a legacy without limits and a void that will never be filled. Rest in peace. You will never be forgotten.”

Meanwhile in Argentina's capital, Buenos Aires, where Maradona has long been worshipped as “El Dios (the God),” people flooded the streets and gathered in San Andres, where Maradona lived, and wept loudly as news of the legends passing spread.

"You took us to the top of the world. You made us immensely happy. You were the greatest of all. Thanks for having existed, Diego. We will miss you for a lifetime,” Argentina President Alberto Fernandez said on Twitter.
