75 years ago today Allied soldiers had their boots down on the beaches of Normandy, France . Today thousands of people are celebrating the anniversary of D-Day. On June 6, 1944, this is considered the beginning of liberation of Western Europe from Nazi's.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was in France with other world leaders including U.S. President Donald Trump for 2 ceremonies along the Normandy coastline to commemorate the historic event. One ceremony, at Juno Beach, was Canadian and the other was international. The ceremonies included young Canadians reciting readings from soldiers, wreath laying and speeches from Trudeau and Trump.
The city of Toronto remembered D-Day this morning with a ceremony at the Cenotaph in front of the Old City Hall where Mayor John Tory made a speech praising the hard work and sacrifices of the soldiers and the Torontonian's who helped from home.
On Juno Beach 1944 Toronto's infantry, The Queen's Own Rifles, suffered the most loss of any other Canadian unit. At least 50 Toronto residents died on D-Day. The GTA helped with more than just sending men to fight, it was also home to Torontonians who manufactured ships, munitions, weapons and planes that were used on the front lines in Europe, Tory praised them for their contributions to D-Day and the war.
