Fistfight erupts in Turkish parliament over criticism of Erdogan

Updated: Mar 4, 2020

All hell broke loose once a Turkish MP, who earlier called Turkey's president "dishonorable, low, and treacherous," stood up to speak in the legislature.

The moment was captured on video. MPs can be seen jumping on desks and sucker-punching their colleagues.

The brawl was instigated by earlier comments a member of Turkey's opposition party made about Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's decision to send troops to Syria. The deployment has led to a mini-war between the two neighbouring countries and the deaths of 59 Turkish soldiers.

The Republican People's Party member, Engin Ozkoc, questioned Turkey's military involvement in war-torn Syria, accusing Erdogan of "sending the children of Turkey's people to fight while his own offspring avoided long-term military service."

Erdogan will be holding peace talks tomorrow, in Moscow, Russia, with Syria's only ally, Vladimir Putin.
