Gender reveal party turns deadly

A family in Knoxville, Iowa, is mourning the loss of their grandmother after a device intended to reveal the family's expected baby's gender struck and killed her.

Police have identified the victim as 56-year-old Pamela Kremeiyer. The 56-year-old woman was struck in the head by a homemade “pipe bomb.” Police pronounced Kremeiyer dead at the scene.

Police say the family used wood and metal to construct the device, later adding gunpowder and other types of explosives to propel the object in the air.

After a piece of the device hit Kremeiyer in the head, police say it traveled 140 meters in the air before landing in a field.

"The family got together for what they thought was going to be a happy event with no intent for anyone to get hurt,”Marion County Sheriff, Jason Sandholdt, said.

Police are currently investigating the incident.
