Germany: Four people, including a baby, killed in a car attack

Police in Germany say four people, including a nine-month-old baby, were killed this morning when a driver of a vehicle in the German city of Trier "deliberately" drove over a curb and into pedestrians.

15 people are injured as a result of what police are describing as a deliberate act.

Witnesses said people screamed as the car crashed through the shopping zone in a similar fashion as 2016's truck attack at a Christmas market in Berlin that killed 12 people and injured dozens.

Police said two women, aged 25 and 73, are among the dead. It's not clear if the deceased child's mother or guardian is among those killed. The fourth victim has been identified as a 45-year-old man.

“We have arrested one person, one vehicle has been secured,” police said, describing the suspect as a 51-year-old German male from Trier who prior to the attack lived in the same vehicle for several nights and had no fixed address.

Authorities are not investigating the incident as a terrorist attack. Prosecutor Peter Fritzen told reporters at a news conference that the suspect had taken a significant amount of alcohol prior to the incident. Trier's mayor said the suspect might be mentally ill, but added, "We should not pass premature judgment.”
