Iran's government says arrests have been made in downing of Ukrainian aircraft

Iran's judiciary spokesperson, Gholamhossein Esmaili, told reporters that several unidentified individuals believed to have been involved in the gunning down of a Ukrainian aircraft were arrested and are currently awaiting trial.

In a televised speech to protesters calling for regime change following Tehran's acknowledgment, Saturday, that the Iranian military shot down Ukrainian flight 752, Iran's President, Hassan Rouhani, promised protesters and affected families a thorough investigation into the "unforgivable error."

The Ukrainian plane was shot down last Wednesday moments after takeoff from Tehran International airport-- just hours after Iran launched several ballistic missile attacks on a U.S military base in Iraq--in retaliation to the U.S' decision to kill a top Iranian general.

Iran says the gunning down of the civilian aircraft carrying 176 people came after security was heightened in fear of American retaliation to the ballistic missile attack.

It wasn't until Saturday when Iran's military claimed responsibility for the crash that killed all 176 people on board, including 57 Canadian citizens and 81 Iranian nationals. Iran initially blamed the crash on engine failure. The argument fell apart when anonymous sources within the U.S government told reporters that the U.S received intelligence that suggested that Iran had gunned down the plane using a surface-to-air missile located close to the airport.

People have taken to the street to call on Iran's Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, and President Rouhani to step-down for their role in what protesters describe as a deliberate misinformation campaign in the downing of the Ukrainian aircraft. By: Niza Nondo
