Kuwait’s General Assembly swears in a new emir

Kuwait has sworn in Sheik Nawaf al-Ahmad al-Sabah as the new emir (king) one day after his brother’s death.

Emir Nawaf al-Sabah was sworn in during a session of the National Assembly. The 88-year-old new ruler, like his late brother Sheik al-Sabah, is a seasoned government official and diplomat mostly known for his modesty and low profile.

Emir Nawaf is taking over Kuwaiti as the country deals with the ongoing pandemic that has infected more than one-hundred thousand people and killed over six hundred.

First on the new king’s agenda, the burial of his late brother who died in an American hospital, on Tuesday afternoon, from complications caused by an undisclosed surgery.

Sheik al-Sabah’s body has already arrived in Kuwait. He’ll be buried today in a private proceeding only open to immediate family members. The late king was 91-years of age at the time of his death.

Starting today, Kuwait is now in a 40 day period of mourning.
