With over 500-thousand confirmed cases of Covid-19, health care systems around the world are struggling to contain the virus as demand for medical attention exceeds supply.
According to the Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center, over 521,086 people have tested positive for the coronavirus and more than 23-thousand have been killed from the flu-like disease.
In Canada alone, there are more than 3 thousand confirmed cases and thirty-five deaths, placing Canada as the 14th worst-hit country by the virus, with China, the U.S, and Italy as the top three.
How countries are addressing the pandemic
The Canadian Government passed a relief package called the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB). The relief fund will provide eligible workers with C$2,000 per month for four months.
U.S lawmakers are going to vote, on Friday, on an unprecedented $2.2 trillion economic rescue package to help businesses, hospitals, and American citizens affected financially by the virus. The fund will give every U.S citizen a cheque of $1,200 and every American household with children an extra $500 per child.
In India, 1.3 billion people are being told to stay indoors, forcing many out of work.
Doctors and nurses in Italy are begging the Italian government to supply more masks, gloves, and goggles. Health workers are also urging the public to take social distancing seriously.
Meanwhile ,Germany’s head of disease control center says the country now has the ability to test 500,000 people a week.
In Wuhan, China, the epicentre of the virus, officials there are planning to end the city’s three month long quarantine period on April 8th.
