Ontario is falling behind on COVID-19 testing target

The number of infections continues to rise as 413 new coronavirus cases were detected in Ontario today.

The province completed 10,506 tests for the novel coronavirus yesterday. And prior to that, for three consecutive days Ontario processed less than 10,000 samples a day.

Ontario’s chief medical officer of health suggested the low testing numbers have been the result of fewer people showing up to be tested.

Premier Doug Ford, in his briefing yesterday, attributed the low testing numbers to Victoria Day long weekend. He’s vowed to ramp up tests like never before.

“We can't just be testing people with symptoms, we have to start going to the broader public,” he said. “How do we know how many asymptomatic people are out there right now?”

Though the number of infections is rising, more than 76.5% of all cases have been resolved.
