Pakistan’s Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has banned TikTok from operating in the country because of failure to regulate “immoral and indecent” content for users in the predominantly Muslim country.
PTA said TikTok was long warned about the consequences of not sufficiently adhering to the regulatory body’s demands, saying, “We have been asking them repeatedly to put in place an effective mechanism for blocking immoral and indecent content…The platform, however, hasn’t been able to fully satisfy Pakistani authorities.”
Pakistan began raising alarms to the Chinese based company as early as July of this year, issuing a “final warning” for TikTok to take down what Pakistan deemed was provocative content.
TikTok, in response to today’s announcement, said “We have been in regular communication with the PTA and continue to work with them. We are hopeful to reach a conclusion that helps us continue to serve the country’s vibrant and creative online community.”
PTA has said it will review any changes TikTok makes and decide whether or not they’re enough to force the regulatory body to revoke its ban.
Already the Chinese based company is banned in India—over security concerns—and is at risk of being banned in the U.S and Australia.
