A Maltese judge has sentenced one Libyan national responsible for hijacking a plane December 23, 2016.
The defendant, Soko Moussa Shaha Ali, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 25 years in a Maltese prison.
Shaha Ali, along with his friend Ali Ahmed Saleh who is pending trial and planning to plead not guilty, hijacked Libyan Afriqiyah Airway Airbus A320, forcing the pilots to land in Malta where Shaha Ali had a four-hour standoff with police demanding his requests be met or risk blowing up the plane.
Authorities refused to engage in any talks until the 109 passengers on board were released. Shaha Ali complied with the requests only to have law enforcement officers turn back on their deal and apprehend him and his co-accused partner Ahmed Saleh.
Police later discovered that their weapons were fake.
