U.S President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that he pardoned his former national security adviser, Michael T. Flynn, who pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI during the prob into Russian collusion in 2016's presidential election.
“It is my Great Honor to announce that General Michael T. Flynn has been granted a Full Pardon. Congratulations to @GenFlynn and his wonderful family, I know you will now have a truly fantastic Thanksgiving!,” Trump said on Twitter.
Flynn pleaded guilty in 2017 for lying to Special Counsel Robert Muller about his then alleged encounters with former Russian Ambassador to the U.S. Sergey Kislyak, shortly after Trump's victory in the 2016 election.
General Flynn responded to the pardon with a tweet referencing a Bible verse from Jeremiah 1:19, which reads, “They will fight against you but will not overcome you, for I am with you and will rescue you,” declares the Lord.”
Meanwhile, the Democrat's chairman of the House Intelligence Committee rebuked the president's pardon, calling it another abuse of power by Trump.
"Donald Trump has repeatedly abused the pardon power to reward friends and protect those who covered up for him. This time he pardons Michael Flynn, who lied to hide his dealings with the Russians. It’s no surprise that Trump would go out as he came in — Crooked to the end," Adam Schiff, Democratic chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, wrote on Twiiter.
