Today Buckingham Palace announced that Prince Charles has tested positive for COVID-19. His Royal Highness, who is 71-years-old and first in line to the British throne, began experiencing mild-symptoms of the virus on Sunday. He reportedly was tested for the virus on Monday the 23rd, his diagnosis was announced on the morning of the 25th.
Prince Charles’ wife, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, was tested for te virus and it has been confirmed that she does not have the virus. The couple are self-quarantining in a palace in Scotland. The Prince is reportedly otherwise in very good health.
A statement from the palace said that they are unable to determine who he contracted the illness fro due to the many social engagements he has participated in this month. The last of his public engagements took place on March 12th, and was a dinner in aid of the Australian bush fire crisis, held in Mansion House in London.
Everyone who has been in touch with the prince in the last two week has been tested for the virus. Queen Elizabeth, aged 93, last saw her son on March 12th and is said to be in good health.
This weekend, in a statement of solidarity with Britons worried about the current pandemic, Queen Elizabeth said “Many of us will need to find new ways of staying in touch with each other and making sure that our loved one are safe. I am certain we are up to that challenge. You can be assured that my family and I stand ready to play our part.”
The United Kingdom has seen 424 cases of COVID-19 deaths, and 8,000 confirmed cases of the virus in the country. This Tuesday, March 24th, saw the most deaths in one day, 89. Prime Minister Boris Johnson has enforced a lock down, asking only for “key workers” and essential services to continue to operate as per usual.
