Prominent Afghan journalist dies in a car explosion

Afghan authorities in Kabul have confirmed the death of Yama Siawash, a former journalist turned bank adviser.

Siawash is among two other civilians killed by a bomb attached to his vehicle. The explosion took place just meters away from his home.

An eyewitness says Siawash’s father and brother were first to reach the vehicle after it detonated and engulfed in flames. No one on-board survived the explosion.

Siawash worked for Afghanistan’s central bank as a key adviser. His expertise stretched from current affairs to politics. His former employer, TOLO News, issued out a statement on Twitter condemning the attack and expressing its grief of Siawash’s death.

It’s not clear at this moment who carried out the attack. Neither the Taliban, Al-Qaeda, nor ISIS, have claimed responsibility. But that hasn’t stopped government officials from weighing in on the murder and vowing justice for Siawash’s death.

“This is an unforgivable and unforgettable crime,” Abdullah Abdullah, the head of Afghanistan’s peace and reconciliation process, said in a statement.

Violence in Afghanistan has been on the rise since the beginning of October. Last week alone, 22 people at Kabul University were killed in an attack orchestrated by ISIS affiliates. And days before the attack at Kabul University, 24 people at a different school in the Afghan capital were killed by unidentified insurgent groups.

Despite the ongoing peace talks between the Afghan government and the Taliban, fighting in the war-torn nation has not reduced.
