In a press release, Norad, the North American Aerospace Defence Command, said its radars picked up two Russian bombers approaching Canadian and American airspace through the Beaufort Sea.
The two Tu-95 Bear H Bombers have been linked to the Russian government. Both planes remained in international airspace. Norad sent five different sets of planes to the Northern coast of Alaska to detour any efforts by the Russians to breach Canadian or American airspace.
"NORAD's top priority is defending Canada and the United States. NORAD operators identified and intercepted the Russian aircraft flying near our nations," said NORAD Commander Gen. Terrence O'Shaughnessy
This is the second incident of its kind, this month alone--and the fifth this year.
