Scientific study shows that 6.7 million people died in 2019 because of air pollution

A study by U.S based Health Effects Institute (HEI) shows that 6.9 people, worldwide, were killed last year by side effects caused by air pollution.

A majority of the deaths came from India and sub-Saharan Africa. According to the health research center, more than 116,000 Indian new-borns died from birth complications believed to have been caused by toxic fumes. Meanwhile in sub-Saharan Africa, 476,000 infants in the region died from what scientists say were fumes coming from cooking fuels inside households.

“An infant’s health is critical to the future of every society, and this newest evidence suggests an especially high risk for infants born in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa,” President of HEI Dan Greenbaum said.

The report pushes air pollution to the fourth seed of the world’s top causes of death. Just above it is dietary risks, tobacco, and high blood pressure.
