Seneca College puts a spotlight on mental health

With only a few weeks left until Winter holidays for most College and University students, Seneca College's Student Federation (SSF) is raising awareness for mental health.

Nationally Mental Health Awareness Week (MHAW) is in May but Seneca College is having their own MHAW this week from November 12-15. Students have only 4 weeks left until the end of their first semester and final exams can be one of the most stressful times of the year.

In order to help students SSF is providing several free events through the week. There was a meditation session yesterday and they will continue to have them after the week is over, today there are free massages being offered in front of the library.

There will be free painting supplies and canvas for a "paint day" tomorrow and to close out the week there will be a "Rev Up!" party on Friday. An SSF staff member says there will be cake on Friday and cake cutting because "everyone loves cake".

SFF is handing out papers with the information that according to the Mental Health Commission of Canada 1 in 5 Canadians personally experience a mental health problem or illness. All week students have been encouraged to leave sticky notes with positive messages on them.

The Canadian Mental Health Association website says the next National Mental Health Awareness Week will be May 4-10 of 2020.
