Ottawa has announced their plan to ban single-use plastics starting 2021.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke earlier today at a stop Monday, just outside of Quebec, on his plans to reduce use of plastic which may include plastic bags, cutlery and straws.

Trudeau then wrote on social media to comment more on his announcement. “Canadians throw away 3 million tonnes of plastic waste every year. 15 billion plastic bags a year. 57 million straws a day. They end up in our oceans, beaches, parks and streets. And this has to stop. We owe it to our planet, and to our kids.”

The full list of banned items hasn’t been released yet, but it could possibly include cotton swabs, drink stirrers, some fast food containers, and balloon sticks.

The Prime Minister said they will be researching on what to ban, but will follow the model chosen by the European Union.

The E.U. voted earlier in March to ban plastic products that can be replaced with reusable items.

Trudeau also revealed by reducing the plastic waste, it can create approximately 42,000 jobs in Canada.
