South Africa set to close its borders amid doubling of COVID-19 cases

With coronavirus cases doubling overnight, South Africa will go into a three-week lockdown starting Thursday.

The southern African nation has the continent's highest number of Covid-19 cases with 554 people testing positive.

“Swift and extraordinary action is required if we are to prevent a human catastrophe of enormous proportions in our country,” South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa said on Monday evening in a nationally televised speech.

Yesterday, the World Health Organization originally projected the number of cases to be 274, but health officials on the ground reported a leap in infections this morning.

Out of the 43 of the 54 infected African countries, only 13 have recorded deaths, none in South Africa.

As if now, 59 people have died throughout the continent and 1,788 others have tested positive for the flu-like virus.
