Spain's PM to meet with separatist group leader

Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said in a nationally televised broadcast today that he plans on meeting Catalon's leader Quim Torra early next month.

Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez attends a news conference after the first cabinet meeting at the Moncloa Palace in Madrid, Spain, January 14, 2020.

The Spanish region, which is home to Barcelona, has been under political turmoil since it voted to leave Spain in 2017 in an internationally unrecognized referendum.

Prime Minister Sanchez says the meeting is expected to take place during the first week of February. His goal is to unite the country and ensure Torra's political support in parliament.

Sanchez is expected to ask Torra to abstain from voting for or against his government when bills are introduced in parliament, as long as he is prime minister. By: Niza Nondo
