With several Ontario educational budget cuts, there happens to be one more added to the list.
The Toronto District School Board could potentially cut funding for the French Immersion program due to an extra cut of $13 million from the provincial government.
TDSB says this could possibly be the hardest hit for the students involved in French immersion.
After a finance committee meeting with the TDSB, the board discovered they are facing a massive shortfall of $67 million, compared to the original anticipated $54 million in provincial funding.
Apart from French immersion, some other possible cuts include reductions in guidance positions, principals, and early learning coaches. Other cuts include transportation services, learning centres, and the central administration which involves reviewing vendor contracts, could get hit hardest.
Spokesperson for the province’s Ministry of Education Kayla Lafelicem says she is extremely proud of the changes being made to education. She then continued stating the board will receive nearly $3 billion for the rest of the year, and if needed, TDSB will have to find any necessary savings in their budget, as students shouldn’t have to suffer from a result of poor fiscal management.
TDSB’s director of education John Malloy noted the board has taken care to leave certain areas mostly untouched, including anti-racism initiatives, safe school, student support services, and special education dollars.
The board says it hasn’t received any documents with details of the province’s cuts yet, so changes could still be made.
