Turkish authorities have detained several people suspected of purposefully starting the forest fires in southeastern Hatay province.
The fires began on Friday in the Belen district and continued throughout Saturday, forcing residents in the area to flee as firefighters attempt to douse the flames.
Government officials first said on Friday that the flames were caused by an explosion in a power transmission unit but have since revisited their statement after uncovering evidence that show signs of arson.
“The investigation continues about the possibility of sabotage and there are suspects detained in relation to the fire,” government officials said.
It’s not clear how many people have been detained.
