Turkey rescues asylum seekers turned back by Greece

Turkey's coast guard said on Saturday it had rescued 19 asylum seekers from potentially drowning after being turned away by Greece's coast guard.

The latest rescue brings the total number of asylum seekers Turkey has pulled away from the rough waters of the Medditerreanain Sea to 44.


Earlier in the day, Turkey rescued 25 asylum seekers along its coast in western Izmir. The refugees have been taken to a provincial migration office for processing, according to officials.
