Turkey's Finance Minister Berat Albayark announced via Instagram his resignation from President Erdogan's cabinet.
Albayrak said in a statement that his decline in health and absence from his family forced him to make the decision. Albayark took on the role of finance minister following the snap election in 2018. He previously served as energy minister when he first took office in 2015.
Albayrak, who is also the son-in-law of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, needs the president to sign off on his resignation to make it official. There's no word yet on whether or not that's going to happen.
Members of the right-wing AK Party haven't publicly spoken about the resignation. However, Albayrak's close family ties with Erdogan increase the possibility of him getting the go-ahead to step down.
The last cabinet member to such a request was Turkish Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu. His request was denied by Erdogan and has since remained in his posting.
Albayrak's statement comes days after Erdogan sacked the country's central bank governor over the tanking of the Turkish lira which has now lost 30 percent of its value, against the U.S dollar, this year alone.
