Ghanaian forces raided the hideout of the 8 kidnappers this morning, rescuing two young girls.
The girls have been identified as 19 Baily Chitty and 20-year-old Lauren Tilley. The pair went missing on June 4. The girls were in Ghana working with the Toronto-based charity, 'Youth Challenge International.'
Ghanaian authorities arrested eight men believed to be involved in the kidnapping. Five of the suspects are Ghanaian and three are Nigerian nationals.
The charity representing the girls had this to say about their current condition, “Bailey and Lauren are receiving emotional and psychological support from professionals as they travel home."
Global Affairs Canada said this about the girls' release, " “We would like to thank the Government of Ghana for their cooperation in the resolution of this case. Consular officials are providing assistance to the Canadians and their families. "
Ghana's Ministry Of Information says the suspects fired gunshots before being apprehended. It's not clear to whom the shots were fired too or if any of the rescuers were injured in the process. One of the suspects, however, suffered minor injuries during the raid.
